Scott-Mag Hughes
Scott ‘Mag’ Hughes started kicking footbag in 1978 after learning about the new American sport while working in Portland, Oregon at a summer recreation program. From there, he developed a dream about performing, as well as teaching and competing in the sport, which led to a long and successful career in footbag.
In Oregon City, Mag was the original member of the world’s first footbag club called the Oregon Footbag Pioneers. He became the third certified World Footbag Association instructor and introduced juggling to the footbag touring teams at the time. The Oregon scene went on to become the longest running footbag group in the world, with many sub-groups such as the Sole Purpose Footbag Group, F.L.O.P., and the Eugene Footbag Club, among others. In its 40+ years as a club, Hughes was an active member every step of the way.
Mag founded W.E. C.A.R.E. Sports in 1985, an alternative sports assembly program. He performed and taught children of all ages in over 5000 schools throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. As of writing this in 2025, he is running programs with the motto "The Most Fun Win."
He has been featured in newspapers and magazines, as well as television appearances on Good Morning Los Angeles, the Jack Lalaine Fitness program, MTV, and various television programs worldwide.
Mag holds the following footbag titles from over the years;
-3 time World Singles Net Champion
-6 time world Doubles Net Champion
-1986 European Singles and Doubles Net Champion
-Inaugural member of the Footbag Hall of Fame in 1997
His wife, Cheryl Aubin Hughes, is also in the Footbag Hall of Fame. Together, they have the longest running footbag marriage, starting in 1983 to today.
Mag’s personal motto for years has been "I don't want a million dollars, I just want 1 million friends."
He credits his mother Jane for instilling in him that no one is a stranger, and everyone you meet is a potential friend. Great words to live by!
For all of his accomplishments and his longevity supporting the sport, Scott ‘Mag’ Hughes is more than worthy of his Footbag Hall of Fame title. He is truly a pioneer and inspiration to the sport.
